How do you get to know what career path you should take when you’re capable of doing a number of things but somehow a master of none? And it’s not like it’s getting easier to find good work let alone work as a youth
This is a dilemma multi-potentialites face. It means rather than being skilled at one process, your ability is probably in consolidating various elements of various processes. Unfortunately, we live in a world that has emphasised a definitive career title and path, but in reality that is a shifting trend. The important work here would be to identify what these multiple capabilities are, go through a discovery exercise to make them tangible by linking them to things you have pursued and accomplished as outcomes - this will start to bring to light how you should best position yourself and perhaps the areas of the multi-capabilities that you then take on as your primary pursuits and those you would consider auxiliary in support of that. How would you articulate this in one sentence if you needed to? Thereafter, map out which industries this could then contribute most impact to vis-a-vis your interests and start to proactively position yourself in this light to the relevant stakeholders and in your personal branding. If you may be lucky to be able to access a career coach as well as some assessments that map out strengths online, this would help you define, refine and position yourself, first and foremost to yourself, then to the world! Continue to stay open and see where it leads you. One thing to mind is multi-pontentialites can get easily distracted and drawn into one project after another. Therefore stick to the goals you mapped out initially so that you can give to what you settle on and let it grow before diversifying. Remember! The world is moving to a gig economy so think of it as supplying your abilities rather than looking for employment and whilst employment is a crisis, research and seek avenues for project-based work. This also helps in being referred to new projects rather than wait for an employment that may not present itself. Holding space for you!
