The three most important things may be as many as we are in this world. I would have like to add to this question - what are the three most important things FOR ME. This requires introspection and lifestyle evaluation so that you can adapt to the things that are most relevant to you. Ultimately, different things are more important than others to different people based on their past and present, and it is about mirco rather than macro adjustments toward a mental health goal we have. This way, achieving it does not seem so far out of reach. In a general sense, all these lead up to certain pillars which I would say are (if choosing three):
1. Social connections: having healthy and varied relationships/friendships and plenty of hugs; loneliness is a growing concern of modern life - people around you is not the same as connection and being able to rely on others as well as being relied on.
2. Movement: movement is a great healer and our bodies are more than tools for carrying our heads around; what is happening to us physiologically has a bigger impact than we would imagine on our mental health.
3. Rest: Our brain cleanses itself quite literally when we are asleep; enough sleep and moments of rest make things a tad clearer for us, supports our mood and ability to get through tasks as well as show up for our social connections. A friend recently reminded me that spending just 5 minutes in nature, mindfully, has great healing benefits: it can improve your mood, reduce stress, improve concentration, reduce anxiety and your sense of well-being. You are yourself nature and therefore a disconnect from the rest of it is also a disconnect from ourselves.
We may have lots of rest, but little connection, or lots of movement but little rest. It is therefore these pillars in harmony that best promote our mental health.
